The Health Management Internship Program (HMIP) has been offered for over 45 years and was the first traineeship of this kind offered for supporting emerging health leaders in Australia. The Program attracts committed, high-potential Interns by offering the opportunity to develop the skills, capabilities and knowledge required to start a career in managing the challenges and complexities of health service delivery across NSW. Combining post graduate health management education with targeted professional development, workplace competency development and assessments and industry networking provides a comprehensive platform for the success of this program.
The 2022 Health Management Internship Program (HMIP) commenced on Friday Jan 28 with Orientation where ten 1st Year Interns joined five 2nd year Interns for a day of introductions and connection. As well as an opportunity to get to know each other and understand the requirements of the program, Griffith University Intern Mentor Mark Avery, introduced them to the University and the requirements of the qualification that forms an integral part of their internship.
The interns were then joined by ACHSM NSW Branch President Karen Patterson FCHSM CHE, Branch Councillor Dominic Dawson FCHSM CHE, and Andrea Earl HMIP Graduate and Branch Councillor, who introduced the Interns to the College, the NSW Branch and the activities they may wish to be involved with as members. The NSW Branch Mentoring Program was explained and Interns are looking forward to meeting their Mentors in May.
2nd years then joined in for a social online lunch together, followed by two panel presentations.
The Graduate Panel included:
The interns were grateful to these HMIP Graduates for sharing their experiences of their own HMIP and for their tips on how to get the most out of the two year Internship program.
The 2nd Panel of Senior Health Leaders included:
These panellists were most generous and candid in sharing with the Interns aspects of their experience of being a health leader and we thank them for their time and commitment to growing our future leaders. They also discussed the attributes they seek in emerging leaders in their organisations, and their advice for these emerging health leaders to lead and succeed at their work.
The final session was spent in breakout rooms with 1st years getting to know their 2nd year buddy and familiarising themselves with the Competency Assessment Tool (CAT) document
which they will use to track their progress and submit every three to four months for review.
The final group completion sharing from the day as well as the evaluation survey, show that the interns were highly engaged throughout the day and felt equipped and excited to commence their internship placements with their organisation below on Monday 31st Jan. We wish them every success with their workplace learning and their Master in Health Science Management which they will complete during the program.
