Auckland Branch of NZIHM hosted a presentation from Jan Adams on 13 June 2019 on 'Lessons of Leadership – Things I would tell my 18 year old self'.
Jeanette Bulteel-Adams (Jan) joined the BUPA leadership team in March 2015 from the Waikato District Health Board where she had held a number of roles, including Director of Nursing and Midwifery and eight years as Chief Operating Officer.
Early 2016 Jan was appointed Bupa’s Global Chief Nurse and as acting MD for New Zealand in April 2016. She became acting MD for Aged Care Australia in April 2017, bringing together both businesses in December 2017.
Jan covered what she has learnt along the way of her 45 year journey in health. To sum up
Jan covered what she has learnt along the way of her 45 year journey in health. To sum up:
I am a registered nurse and midwife and specific skills that have assisted me through my career have been Common sense, resilience and being a role model.
The politics in health and the fight for supremacy was very high. So I volunteered to work nights to minimise my exposure to this.
Tip: When something is wrong back yourself and speak up! This taught me a lot about myself and how to stand up for myself.
I was hospital trained. You are never too old to learn. I have a thirst for knowledge
Tip: Don’t turn your minds off and embrace being a lifelong learner
Tip: Learn from and with those around you.
I have accepted opportunities that have come my way and valued each experience.
Tip: Good things come to good people
Gained experiences and being able to share with others is very rewarding.
Health is an interesting ecosystem
Lesson 8 – You will identify with ‘the long and winding road’
It’s a journey, not always straight, I have learnt from the twists, turns and pitfalls.
It was a great session with frank conversations and great learning for the audience as well.
