Auckland Branch of NZIHM hosted a presentation from Professor Alan Merry on Thursday 16 May 2019: “Measuring Surgical Outcomes: All for One and One for All”

Professor Merry drew our attention to Calls to Action in 2015 when members of the media used the Official Information Act to request that Public Hospitals provide data on number on procedures, deaths and complications for individual named surgeons.

In the presentation, Prof Merry covered the statistical challenges of measuring surgical outcomes; teamwork in surgery and perioperative care; culture in the operating room.

A critical analysis, followed by a discussion of the decision in New Zealand not to publicize the results of individual surgeons, but instead to publicize the results of surgical units and to gain a greater understanding of how best to achieve and demonstrate excellent surgical outcomes, was the highlight of the evening.
